Marie, a single mother, was looking to organize her life, starting with her finances. The ultimate goal? Building a better future for her three-year-old son, Robert.
One Tuesday night, she turned the radio to 96.5 FM and heard Progreso Latino Informa. The show inspired her to go to Progreso Latino, a multi-service non-profit in Central Falls, for financial guidance. She arrived with bad credit and approximately $5,000 in debt. Marie made enough at her job to support herself and her son’s needs, but couldn’t make the budget work.
After her first interview with Progreso Latino, Marie set two goals: improve her credit scores and become debt-free. They started with a financial assessment and then created a family budget that would enable Marie to pay bills on time. Following this specific spending plan, she was able to save enough to buy her son Christmas presents.
Marie was also able to use Volunteer Income Tax Assistance for free income tax filing. Her refund from the Earned Income Tax Credit eliminated the last of her debt, three months ahead of her original goal.
Now, Marie is working alongside Progreso Latino on her credit and savings to move into the next stage: home ownership.
Marie now has a plan, savings, and working knowledge of family budgets, payment projections, and credit reviews. These tools have changed Marie’s outlook as well as her and her son’s financial future.
In 2015-2016, United Way of Rhode Island with the help of donors invested $562,000 in financial stability programs, including Progreso Latino.
