R.I. letter carriers picked up 111,000 pounds of non-perishable foods

Donations to area food pantries were left by mailboxes on May 8

The National Association of Letter Carriers' Food Drive is the largest single-day food drive in the country. It helps to replenish the warehouse shelves at the R.I. Community Food Bank during the summer when many families with school-age children need food the most.

Providence, Edgewood, Elmwood, Esmond, Greenville, Harrisville, Johnston, Lincoln, Little Compton, Middletown, Narragansett, Newport, N. Kingstown, N. Providence, Olneyville, Pawtucket, Pascoag, Portsmouth, Providence, Riverside, Rumford, Smithfield, Tiverton, Wakefield, Warren, Warwick, Westerly, W. Warwick and Woonsocket.

This food drive is made possible through partnerships with UWRI, National Association of Letter Carriers, AFL-CIO Community Services, The U.S. Postal Service, Campbell's, Feeding America, Valpak and The National Rural Letter Carrier's Association (NRLCA).

'Flood Telethon' raises nearly $131,000; RIFRF total tops $750,000

The R.I. Broadcasters Association and UWRI teamed up on April 16 to raise money for the R.I. Flood Recovery Fund.

Every radio and television station in Southern New England participated in the RIBA-UWRI telethon, which aired from 4 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. During regularly scheduled programming, area TV and radio stations interrupted shows with short over-the-air cut-ins of interviews and newscasts that encouraged donations.

The dollars raised during the R.I. Flood Recovery Fund Telethon will be used to help cover expenses incurred from the flooding. One hundred percent of the contributions made to the RIFRF, which is being administered by United Way of Rhode Island (UWRI), will go back into the community.

An independent committee of community leaders will determine how the RIFRF money will be distributed. Rhode Island organizations (such as community action agencies), who assist individuals directly, will take charge of disbursing the funds.

3 extraordinary unsung heroes honored

UWRI & NBC10 announce the local winners of the R.I. Jefferson Awards for volunteer service

The winners:

Lorne Adrain, a Providence-based insurance advisor who has devoted his life to volunteering and is the founder of National Neighborhood Day.

Steve Bruno, an electrician from Hope, R.I., whose personal battle with kidney disease inspired him to lead the charge in the field of organ donation.

Frank Forte, a 62-year-old from Warwick, who despite health ailments continues to work overtime as a Court Appointed Special Advocate.

Each recipient accepted his award during a breakfast ceremony, hosed by NBC 10 news anchor Patrice Wood, and held at United Way in mid-April. All of them have gone above and beyond the call of duty and LIVE UNITED to bring about long-term systemic change in our state.

United Way launches 'R.I. Flood Recovery Fund'

100 percent of proceeds to help out Rhode Island

Anthony Maione, president & CEO of UWRI, announces the Flood Recovery Fund.

As an immediate to response to the worst flooding in Rhode Island in 200 years, United Way of Rhode Island set up the Rhode Island Flood Recovery Fund. The RIFRF will raise dollars to help with expenses not covered by FEMA, private insurance and the U.S. Small Business Administration.

One hundred percent of the proceeds will go back into the community, and the money will be distributed through local community organizations (such as community action agencies). (RIFRF will not make money available directly to any individuals or families.)

Even before the RIFRF was announced on April 8, corporations had stepped up to the plate and donated a total of more than $590,000. Click here to read more and make a donation.
