Help local children gain the gift of reading.

Last year, United Way of Rhode Island celebrated National Family Volunteer Day for the first time — and it was a huge success. Families enthusiastically created literacy kits, based on their favorite books, to encourage children to read at home.

We proudly announce United Way of Rhode Island’s Second Annual National Family Volunteer Day on Saturday, November 18, 2017. During this event, families create literacy kits chock full of puppets, games, and other props that help make reading fun. Local nonprofit agencies distribute the finished kits to local children.

NEW IN 2017: We’ve partnered with the Roger Williams Park Zoo to make this year’s event extra-exciting for families and children. Families who participate in the event and who donate an animal-themed book will receive free children’s passes to the Zoo. The passes will be good for one-time use, anytime during the year.

Volunteering as a family is a great way to spend quality time together, while also teaching children the importance of helping others, teamwork, and generosity. We ask each family to bring at least one new, K-3 children’s book, and their creativity — we’ll provide the craft supplies and snacks.
