RI Afterschool Network: Spring 2019 Workshops

Diversity and Inclusion Series

Join the Rhode Island Afterschool Network on Tuesday, April 23, and Tuesday, May 28, for a two-part series: Diversity and Inclusion.

The first session, “Cultures at Work: Perspective Workout,” focuses on multiculturalism. You’ll learn about fundamental attribution error, the U-curve of culture, shock, bias vs. discrimination, communication styles, high-context and low-context cultures, and the Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity.

The second session, “Timely Response to Intercultural Incidents,” focuses on methods to reframe conflict. You’ll learn about activities to implement after intercultural incidents, individual action planning, and organizational guidelines for interculturally sensitive youth work.

Becoming Visible: Serving LGBTQ+ Youth & Young Adults

Join the Rhode Island Afterschool Network on Friday, May 3, for Becoming Visible: Serving LGBTQ+ Youth & Young Adults.

This workshop provides information that will deepen your understanding of sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression, and presents best practices for working with LGBTQ+ young people. You’ll examine the vulnerabilities of LGBTQ+ individuals and explore the intersections of bias and discrimination based on class, race, religion, legal status, and/or housing instability. In addition, you’ll learn how to establish safe environments and offer sensitive, affirming services.

Youth Mental Health First Aid Series

Join the Rhode Island Afterschool Network on Tuesday, May 14, and Tuesday, May 21, for a two-part series: Youth Mental Health First Aid.

This series will teach you how to identify, understand, and respond to mental illnesses and substance use disorders in young people ages 12 – 18. You must attend both sessions to receive certification.

You’ll learn:

  • Common signs and symptoms of mental illnesses, including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), anxiety, depression, and eating disorders
  • Common signs and symptoms of substance use
  • How to interact with an adolescent in crisis and connect them to the appropriate care

Growing Up WILD

Join the Rhode Island Afterschool Network on Friday, May 17, for Growing Up WILD.

This workshop introduces Growing Up Wild, a program designed for ages 3 – 7 that builds on children’s sense of wonder and invites them to explore wildlife and the world around them. You’ll go through the curriculum guide and learn how to facilitate the lessons. Then, you’ll model a lesson in front of your peers.
