Family volunteering during April vacation.

Reading is vital to a child’s academic success, and having books at home is an important part of learning to read.

During April vacation, United Way of Rhode Island hosts Literacy United; a day where families from across the Ocean State gather to make literacy kits for local children.

Literacy kits contain a children’s book and puppet, game, or prop, inspired by the story, that families create to encourage young people to read at home.

Besides spending quality time together, families who volunteer help children in our community build a solid foundation for learning.
